I do research on machine learning and botanical data integration analysis. The manuscript was sent for review on the third day after submission, and the review comments were returned in a month. The speed of this journal’s editor and reviewers were very fast. It took more than 4 months in total, and it was finally accepted after 2 rounds of review. Which was different from the one upstairs who said the difficulty of NC was huge, mine was transferred to Nucleic Acids Research after being rejected immediately by NC. Maybe it has something to do with the field and editor's preferences.

This was the second NAR submission, and it was the editorial rejection on the day of the first submission. The I transferred to NC a few months later. It may be due to the epidemic. Four days later, it was editorial rejection. It is said that several editors have read it, and they all thought that they should transfer to virology journals, and then transfer to NC. The first reviewer seemed less enthusiastic but provided valuable feedback, while the second reviewer highly appreciated our results and raised many insightful questions, feeling as if they were involved in the project. The editor leaned towards the second reviewer's opinion, allowing a revision period of seven months.
2025.01.13 Resubmitted the manuscript. Despite the lengthy revision period, only a few experiments needed to be added. The focus was on addressing the reviewers' questions in the paper and resubmitting before the new year.

2025.01.22 Paper accepted. The article was accepted without being sent back to the reviewers, and the editor accepted it directly.

This was my first experience with a reputable journal, and my mentor taught me to respect all reviewers' opinions and respond politely and attentively, avoiding unnecessary words and keeping the responses concise. Our lab has already published three articles in NAR, with a total turnaround time of less than two months and a review period of about two weeks. Some hot topics or competitive directions may have a faster review process.

Sharing Three Submission Experiences. We work on plants.
The first article was rejected by Plant Cell, rejected after review by NAR, rejected by NCB with a referral to a smaller NC, and finally published in NC.
The second article was rejected after review by Plant Cell, we submitted directly to NCB and successfully referred to a smaller NC, and finally published smoothly.
The third article followed the same routine, first Plant Cell, then NAR and then referred to a smaller NC, finally published successfully.

Seeing the promotion of journal recognition makes me speechless. Professional journals and these so-called comprehensive journals have different considerations. PC and NAR look at the driving force for the discipline, while PNAS, SA, NC, etc. look at whether they can generate discussion. Those in research look at professional journals, while those in business look at comprehensive journals. Each to their own needs

The submission process is as follows: submit in September 2023, receive reviewer comments in about a month with around 70 issues, and given half a year for revisions; receive another round of reviewer comments before the Chinese New Year in February 2024 after a month. Receive second round of comments in early March 2023, with not many comments but still given half a year for revisions. Return in early April 2023 and directly accepted without external review. Our research is relatively niche, but highly innovative, and we are quite confident in this study. We have submitted to countless journals, including domestic ones, and have been rejected. We also submitted to journals with lower impact factors than NAR like EMBO J, PNAS, and were rejected as well. NAR editors are very professional, and I feel that my research aligns well with their direction, so I am happy to be recognized. Finally, although it is not ideal to publish in NAR, I am still very satisfied

Saying that NAR research paper has low citation is truly not understanding academia. Articles that anyone can understand will naturally have high citation. NAR's articles have a high threshold; you probably can't understand them or don't have the patience to read them, so of course the citation is low. This is almost negatively correlated with the level of the journal and the level of the article
