I submitted my paper in mid-January 2020, and the status showed "under evaluation" one week after submission, but it has been still in this status since two and a half months ago. As it is an open access journal featuring fast publication speed and high publication fees, the delay in this manuscript was extremely disappointing. I need to emphasize that according to the comments here, the submission experience of most people reflected sending for review was two or three weeks later after submission, which is consistent with the time claimed on the journal's homepage. However, who have similar experience with me is by no means not alone, and such examples are everywhere! Please refer to the following journal comments website: https://scirev.org/reviews/science-advances/. It is shown here that after an author submitted a manuscript, the editor rejected the manuscript two months later, only using a template without specific reasons. In Nature series journals, such as various flagship Nature journals, if the manuscript stays in the hands of the editor for more than two weeks, which are not rejected in seconds, the editors will give a detailed evaluation on the work and the reason for rejection. In the link above, we also see that another author had not received the editor's decision six months after submitting his manuscript, so he had to withdraw the manuscript!

2019.5.30 submit; 2019.7.30 reject after review; 2019.8.20 re-submit; 2019.10.22 require revision; 2019.12.09 submit revised MS; 2020.2.11 require revision again; 2020.2.22 submit revised MS; 2020.2.25 accept-technical hold. About 2–4 weeks after submission, the editor would handle it. He would also check the format errors of every modification. There were three editors, all of them would review the manuscript, and finally the deputy editor would decide whether to accept it or not. It is an open access journal, and the publication fee is $4,500. The review cycle is relatively long! However, the review is still very professional. They gave a lot of comments to the article! The impact factor should reach 16 next year.

Overall, the staff of Science Advances is very efficient. It took less than a week for the first editor to send the paper to a more relevant editor in the field, and the second editor completed their review in about two weeks. The opinions were very important. It was really a challenge trying to make the article better. In short, the journal’s cycle is very fast, so if you need to publish a paper for graduation or other urgent reasons, you can consider this one!

Submission to AM was rejected, so I revised it extensively and added data from another small article I had been holding back. I submitted it to Science Advances on March 3rd, and it is still under evaluation as of today, March 6th. It is said that due to Trump's plan to cut government funding to AAAS, SA will increase its acceptance rate this year to support the journal. I hope they will give me a chance to pay the publication fee. As it is a shared first authorship, according to our school's regulations, publications in journals such as AM, SA, NC, NBE, JACS, and Angew will not have points deducted. However, if the journal is Biomaterials, AFM, or AS, the points will be halved, and our group does not cover AS publication fees, only SA and NC.
