What Is the ISC?
The
International Science Council (ISC) is a leading global organization dedicated to the advancement of science as a tool for addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. Headquartered in Paris, France, it was established in 2018 following the merger of two historic institutions: the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC). This merger created a unified platform that bridges the natural and social sciences to tackle complex global issues.
With a membership network spanning over 200 organizations in more than 140 countries, the ISC is uniquely positioned to amplify the voice of science on the global stage.
Mission and Goals
At its core, the ISC works to advance science as a global public good. Its vision is for science to drive sustainable development, social equity, and innovation worldwide. The ISC focuses on fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, promoting inclusivity in science, and ensuring that scientific knowledge influences global policies and societal outcomes.
What Does the ISC Do?
The ISC’s work revolves around four main areas
Policy Engagement
The ISC provides evidence-based insights to inform international policies, particularly on issues like climate change, disaster preparedness, and sustainable development.
Strengthening Science Globally
Through capacity-building initiatives, the ISC supports scientists in regions with limited resources, helping ensure equitable opportunities for scientific discovery.
Promoting Open Science
The ISC advocates for free access to scientific knowledge and encourages transparency in research.
Facilitating Collaboration
By creating platforms for dialogue among scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders, the ISC fosters partnerships to address shared global challenges.
Membership and Structure
The ISC’s
membership includes:
1. International Scientific Unions and Associations: Groups representing specific disciplines, such as physics or sociology.
2. National Scientific Organizations: Science academies and councils from countries worldwide.
3. Affiliated Members: Organizations that align with the ISC’s values and mission.
Why It Matters
The ISC’s role in uniting science and society is more critical than ever. From shaping policies to supporting scientists in underserved regions, the ISC ensures that scientific discoveries translate into real-world solutions. By fostering collaboration and driving inclusive initiatives, the council positions science as a cornerstone for addressing global challenges.
Looking Ahead
The ISC’s future plans include enhancing resilience to climate change, ensuring ethical governance of emerging technologies like AI, and expanding open science practices.
